After completing her schooling, she worked as a stenographer in Chicago with the Vestey Cold Storage Company. From there, Evelyn rose through the ranks to become chief auditor and troubleshooter in the business and found herself earning $250,000 a year (comparable to $5 million a year today) making her the highest paid female executive of her time.
Evelyn traveled the world for the Vestey brothers during World War I and then retired to Superior. In 1924, two years after Lord William Vestey's first wife died, Evelyn married the man who had built an empire, shipping refrigerated meat to the allies during the war. She relocated to England and lived in the inner suburbs of London at Kingswood Castle.
During her travels, Evelyn never lost interest for Superior. Among her many gifts to the community were: a bridge for Lincoln Park; two acres of land given as a bird sanctuary and children's playground; and a site and funds to build Brodstone Memorial Hospital in memory of her mother who was an advocate for local healthcare.
Lord Vestey died in December of 1940 and five months later, on May 23, 1941, Evelyn passed away. Her ashes were sent back to Superior for interment at Evergreen Cemetery, making her the only nobility to be buried in the state of Nebraska.
Each year, Superior is honored to pay tribute to this remarkable woman who remains an inspiration and who gave so much to the community which she loved.
